Meet
Jake
I came into rescue from a hard situation; but despite that, I am a fun, excitable and happy bird who is looking for a home where I can be loved and cared for the way I deserve! You may notice in my photos that I am a partially nakey bird - I plucked because I was in an unsafe, abusive home before I came here - but trust me, this doesn't take away from how handsome I truly am! We nakey birds are just as loving and lovable as any fully plumed parrot.
I am generally a happy-go-lucky macaw and I am a huge goof. Foster Mom says that, despite the sad situation I was in, I am still so positive and happy and that inspires her! I love to play and interact with my person. I will bounce around and bob my head and hollar with joy when I'm in a good mood! When we've built up trust, I will actively seek you out. I enjoy just being near you, or cuddling, or even riding on your shoulder! When I am comfortable in a place, I tend to travel and explore, so it will be important for my forever family to have enough space for me to play, crawl and offer me enough bird safe wood to destroy. My favorite toys are anything I can chew up - I also am a happy macaw if you set aside some pieces of cardboard for me to shred. I also have a plastic ball I enjoy banging and chasing around and plastic baby cups I enjoy tossing. I can play pretty rough!
I do have a chronic air sac disease from the unsafe conditions of my last home. Because of this, I get an inflatable air bubble in my chest. It doesn't cause me any pain or discomfort and I am not on any medications. So you don't need to be afraid or worried about it. It's just a part of my unique self!
I can fly, so it's important not to take me outside without a proper bird harness or carrier. I can be encouraged to wear a harness without giving you too much trouble. Because I'm flighted, sometimes I will fly from place to place around your home. I have a tarzan yell every time I fly!
I am generally a pretty good eater. My favorite foods are fruits like banana, apple, plums, pitted cherries, blueberries, and citrus fruits. I am more likely to eat veggies like peppers, broccoli, peas and beans if they are prepared in a chop for me to pick through and I can usually be convinced to try something if you are eating it and making a big deal over how good it is! I also really like the cooked Worldly Cuisines by Higgins, and mashes made with sweet potato. My favorite treats are almonds, walnuts and hazelnuts. Be warned that if you eat food around me I will get very angry if you don't share it with me!
I might do best in a home with a single human companion, as I tend to get very jealous and protective of my chosen human. I do prefer women, but in my previous foster home I got along with the man who lived there (I even let him pick me up gently like a football)! If a human couple is willing to work with me, I could be encouraged to not be so jealous towards one of them. I was around a small human in my last foster home, too, and I interacted well with her. I do really well around other birds too, especially smaller birds. I even had a little lovebird friend at one point!
We macaws are great companions and I am no exception! I am eagerly looking for a human companion who will love me, care for me and treasure me for the unique soul that I am. You can follow my adventures on Instagram : https://instagram.com/jakey_the_nakey_wonderbird
